Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc - Red French wine grape, often used in Bordeaux blends to add acidity and aroma. Usually blended, it is becoming increasingly trendy as a varietal. Genetic research indicates that it is the parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, so says one source.

Show All

Now just imagine a warm sun-drenched vineyard loaded with green-golden clusters and you’re right next door all red a little rough but ready to put on your best face and get together with that lady with the golden…
And what becomes of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc’s botanical frolic is no other than big boy Cabernet Sauvignon.

But somehow as time went on Cabernet Franc was given the back seat and considered a blending grape but not the star of the Bordeaux blend. Well, not to reinvent the wheel I planted my one acre block of Cabernet Franc with the idea that just like in the Bordeaux, Cab Franc would disappear blended behind Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Well Cabernet Franc is its own show and CF is the star. Ironically more than 1% or 2% in blending trials with our Cabernet Sauvignon and CF takes a leading role. CF does help out here and there with our Grenache, King’s Red XIII, Tippitonia and who knows. So in the cellar CF is the go to wine for blending but we also love to bottle a reserve barrel select too.

We grow CF on a Quadrilateral cordon system called the California Sprawl which lines up a whole lot of its little clusters.
